THE REASON BEHIND SPLIT ENDS

As your facial hair starts growing without the proper moisturizers (such as Balms and Oils) the hair starts to dry out.  When the hair dries it will end up getting brittle, creating a coarse effect, which in turn causes the strands to divide and fray at the ends.  These splits will result in the strand ends growing in different directions.

So how do you keep your beard nourished, soft and smooth?

A sebaceous gland is found around the root of the hair which produces sebum oil.  The amount of oil produced by this gland is limited and different among individuals.  This oil keeps the facial hair moisturized and, in turn, healthy looking.  However, as the facial hair starts to grow longer the oil is not sufficient for the entire hair, and the parts this oil doesn’t reach becomes dry and tends to split.  This is when a good supplementary Oil or Balm, such as the Abe & Jar products, comes in extremely handy.

Some routines, for instance dyeing or hair drying your beard will also cause the dryness of the hair and therefore create split ends.  So, it is important that a beard oil or balm is used to allow your hair to recover.

Another thing you need to be careful of is the beard wash you use.  Many shampoos are made from harsh chemicals which tend to take away the natural oils from your hair, especially beards.  So, it’s best to use a gentle Beard Shampoo and Conditioner such as the Abe & Jars Sailors Blend.
